Takk, Iceland...

There are some great road trips around the world - Route 66, driving the Nullarbor, the Perth to Mandurah freeway.  I've only been lucky enough to complete the latter however fail to see how the former two, and any other for that matter, could be anywhere near as beautiful or interesting as Iceland's Ring Road.

The Ring Road is a 1,339 kilometre stretch of road that snakes around the entirety of Iceland and is by far one of the most exhilarating things I've done in my life.  The thrill of hopping in our car every morning and chasing the Ring Road around the coast, up and down snowy mountains and through lava fields is second to none.  Everyday we drove further and later than we probably should have but stopping for the day was tough to do.

Iceland has a law called the Law of Survival that allows you to park and sleep anywhere that you like around the island.  So we set off around island nation in (Van) Morrison for eight of the best nights of our collective lives.

My desire to see Iceland originally came from a love for Sigur Ros, the more I read about Iceland the stronger the desire became and at some point along the track it evolved into a shared desire between Nix and I to the point where we anticipated going there more than we anticipated the beginning of this trip.  It goes without saying that we were shitting ourselves with excitement in the weeks and days leading up to flying there and our expectations had spiralled out of control as we flew into Reykjavik.

Over millions of years the Icelandic landscape has been continually shaped by volcanoes and glaciers, hence its distinction as the Land of Fire and Ice and hence its devastatingly stunning beauty.  The next couple of weeks of posts will hopefully give you an insight into just how lucky we were to witness it in all of its glory.
